INTERACTIVE SESSION FOR THE TEACHERS

A session was conducted by the school counselor which included the Principal, Teachers and Other Staff Members of the school on 12 Mar 19. The session was aimed to be an interaction amongst all parent regarding the problems being faced in school vis-à-vis the students. The problems were discussed and the possible management strategies discussed and brainstormed. The following points were covered in the session.
1. The requirement for a counselor and the role of the counselor.
2. Different problems being faced in school which included – behavioral – issues, problems related to adolescence, specific conditions like attention – Deficit/hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) & Conduct Disorder (CD), Emotional Difficulties and the specific problems of the children due to the environment at home.
The teachers shared their experience as well to help better understand the kind of difficulties we have to deal with.
3. Management techniques were discussed next, which included :-
• Better student – Teacher Relationship
• Use of Rules in classroom & emphasis on formation of routine and habits.
• Use of “Punishments” & “Rewards” in a more psychological and effective way.
• Implementation of a Mentor – Mentee program. This program could be taken up in groups for better effect wherein, a particular teacher is the mentor for a specific group of children.
• Emphasis on regular C if possible, weekly meeting of teachers and class teachers along with the counselor to keep teach of the progress of the students.
4. Discussion also emphasized on “managing negative behavior” of the child and not the child themselves. This also aims at reducing stigma and making the teacher more approachable to the students.
5. It was widely acknowledged that the involvement of parents was a major issue which required to be tackled by changing our approach towards the parents.
The session set rolling a few changes to be incorporated in the upcoming session and follow up session to be done to check on the effectiveness of these and to brainstorm newer management techniques.
