So four months ago, I decided to look into a new option: the recently released Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) the company’s first antivirus and anti malware application. (MSE is available as a free download from the product’s info page.)

So far, my real life test drive indicates that Microsoft may have finally got basic security right.

Langa primarily worked with MSE on Windows 7. Microsoft’s free security suite doesn’t include a firewall, but Langa believes as I do that the Windows 7 firewall does a good job of preventing intrusions and malicious inbound traffic.

Langa found MSE to be both effective and non intrusive:

In operation, Microsoft Security Essentials is nearly invisible there’s almost no user interaction needed. (Windows’ firewall, likewise, has never needed much interaction.) MSE automatically scans files when they’re created or accessed, and it monitors system activity for suspicious aOlernKienOP

MSE calls for attention only when it finds trouble, as shown in Figure 1. But you can skip even this minor level of interaction if you direct MSE to automatically run recovery actions such as remove, clean, or quarantine.

The one thing Langa didn’t care for: MSE’s full scans take a long time. In fact, one took a full 24 hours to finish! But he notes that, once a full scan is done, subsequent "light" scans happen quicker.

Langa checked his results by installing other security suites, then letting them scan his systems overnight. Several of them came aOlernKienOP
