Mr Scott said Klout represented everything bad about social media, “wrapped up into one hateful web site, (that was) all the competitive number measuring contests, all the ‘monetisation’ and ‘analytics’ that ‘social media experts’ blab on about”.

“Now, Klout and its ilk are being ushered in as an example of what developers working with Twitter should build,” he said.

Commercialising how people connect to Twitter may make good business sense, but Mr Scott said the blocking of the developers and apps that helped to boost its popularity was a betrayal.

“Coming from a company that used to thrive on openness, and whose initial push to success was by Air Jordan Future the techies who built interesting, small projects, it just seems rude”, he said.

“There were things we wanted to see, to see if you retweeted something ,who it reached and where it popped up all over the world,” Mr Nolan said.

“If we invest time and effort into developing that and then Twitter says ‘we’re not into it or working with you’ and revokes our token, all of our customers who bought it or got it for free during its early days would say ‘we paid you. What’s going on?'”.
