Choosing to grow a home farm is a huge step towards living more sustainably and reducing your carbon footprint. Using recycled materials in your garden like planting pots is yet another great step towards growing and living greener. Planters can also be quite expensive, so if you trying to garden on a budget breathing new life into old containers can save some money.

Recycled planting pots can be made from just about anything you can think of. With a little imagination you could even turn something as irregular as an old kitchen sink into a planter. Scrounge through your own garage or through yard sales for unique containers that will add some artistic flair to your home farm. Plants can be grown in almost anything as long as it has enough drainage.

A few examples of some interesting choices for recycled planting pots are cracked or broken kitchenware (a chipped teapot for example), old shoes (Crocs are great since they already have holes for drainage!), over the door shoe organizers and even rubber tires. It doesn have to be anything too crazy though, even a simple plastic jug can be re appropriated to use on your home farm.

Once you have selected a container, simply clean it and determine whether it will need to be modified for drainage. A solid container will need holes added or if that not possible without causing damage in the case of something like old pottery, you can simply use the recycled planter pot as an outer container and place a plastic draining container inside. If you chose something like an old woven basket, on the other hand, it will need to be lined to prevent leakage.
