Runners come from all walks of life and cover every conceivable demographic. And because we’re all so different, not all runners should wear the same type of shoe.

A “trail” shoe will sport cleats, which are rounded studs on the bottom of the shoe that allow your foot to grab the uneven terrain of the off road. In contrast, a street shoe will have a much smoother sole, while a true “track and field” shoe may have actual spikes.

If you are a casual runner who might only run one or two miles at a time, you can generally just pay attention to the age of your shoes. When the shoes hit eighteen months old, it’s time to replace them.

If you cover many more miles per week or per day, knowing if your shoe will last 200 or 400 miles is important as you may want to invest in a shoe which will last much longer, based on what your budget can bear.

Although there are many subtle variations in the way your foot may hit the ground, there are two very distinct types of support a shoe can provide.
