When removing the drum brakes, make matchmarks on the drum and hub studs so that you install the drum in the same position. Then you can remove the center grease cap, cotter pin, castle nut and center retainer washer. Use an axle nut socket for the nut.

Chances are the brake drum will not come off easily by hand. In this case, you will need to retract the brake shoes by rotating the adjusting screw. For this, remove the rubber plug form the back of the backing plate. Insert a screwdriver through the adjusting hole and push on the adjuster lever resting on the star wheel of the adjusting screw. Then, with a brake adjusting tool, rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes.

With both brake drums removed, replace one set of brakes first. Remove both brake shoe return springs with a brake spring tool. Then remove the two retaining clips (hold down springs) one at the center of each shoe. These clips are like small buttons held in place by a center pin. Use a hold down spring tool to rotate the clips 90 degrees. This will align the clip center slot to the flat end of the center pin and disengage the clip from the brake shoe.

Once the springs are removed, you can disconnect the shoes from the adjusting screw and the wheel cylinder by pulling them off the back plate. The rear shoe on the assembly has a lever in the back where the parking brake cable attaches. Disengage the cable with a pair of pliers and transfer the shoe lever to the new shoe.

With the old shoes removed, clean the brake assembly of dust using brake parts cleaner and a clean, lint free towel. Friction material used on some brake lining contains asbestos and may cause cancer if inhaled in enough quantities, so never blow brake dust away to clean the brake assembly. It may end up in your lungs.

Before installing the new set of shoes, apply brake grease to the contact points between the backing plate and the brake shoes. But make sure to keep the grease off the brake linings to avoid brake performance problems.

After installing the new shoes, install the brake drum momentarily and rotate the wheel by hand. The new shoes should slightly drag against the drum. If not, adjust the shoes by rotating the star wheel on the adjusting screw.

When ready, install the axle nut using the axle nut socket and a torque wrench. Tighten the nut to the torque specified by your car manufacturer for your particular Loyale model. You will find this information in your vehicle service manual or by calling your local dealer service department.
