A postgraduate student at Nottingham Trent University will explore the theme of memory by beaming images and videos onto the windows of the city’s New Art Exchange building on February 12. Creative Collaborations student, Lorenzo Madge, will be using the building as a medium for both images and video from 6 10pm as part of ‘Al Nur A Feast of Light’ part of Nottingham Light Night 2010.

Lorenzo, based in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, will beam multimedia projections onto five of the windows from inside the building. The main window above the entrance will feature a piece called ‘A Memory of Style’ and will be made up of images of visitors who attended Caribbean arts event ‘The Meaning of Style’ at New Art Exchange last month. The images have been manipulated to ‘dissolve’ seamlessly across the cultural spectrum.

A moving image work entitled ‘Hairbrush Diaries’ will be projected across the corner windows of the building suggesting a three dimensional aspect similar to ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’. This piece will play with the carefree but often mundane memories of growing up.

Lorenzo said: "My MA has involved working with notions of memory, for which people and places are often at the forefront. I’m curious about what happens when images from memory are projected into specific places that suggest new meanings."

The free event, being run in partnership with Nottingham Trent University and New Art Exchange, will coincide with Nottingham’s third Light Night event. Light Night organised by Nottingham City Council in partnership with Nottingham Business Improvement District will see visitors following trails of illuminations and interacting with light installations as part of this year’s theme, ‘hidden spaces’.

For Light Night, New Art Exchange will also feature a special performance from Nottingham’s Manushi Dance in the Performance Space. This is a work in progress piece in the lead up to their forthcoming production: ‘Taj Mahal A love story’ and takes place between 7 9pm. Admission is free.
