DEFENDING champions Newby Hall crept past Masham on the opening day of the Nidderdale League season, but had no such luck when they took on Air Jordan DMP Ouseburn on Saturday losing by one run.

Ouseburn only made 123 with the bat but their meagre total proved enough as Newby were skittled for 122.

The visitors were never in danger once opener John Strover had made 69 and he was ably supported by Jon Smailes (27), Shahan Patel (35) and Andy Ellis (24no).

Dacre Banks strolled home by 174 runs against Knaresborough Forest after making 310 4, while Goldsborough triumphed by four wickets against Alne after being set just 129.

Masham made it two close finishes in the opening weeks of the season, this time going down by eight runs at Killinghall.

Ian Timms bagged 5 34 in 12 devastating overs as Masham were dismissed for only 144 despite a solid start in which Andrew Cullen scored 42 and openers Andrew Smith (24) and Philip Newton (21) also contributed.

Killinghall had also struggled, but made what turned out to be a match winning 152 with Timms (43) starring with the bat and Tony Whittaker (28no) also weighing in.

Another low scoring encounter at Kirkby Malzeard saw Hampsthwaite win by seven wickets after they were set 132 to win.

Andrew Crystal (56no) saw them home, assisted by Kenny Crack (36).
